Orangutan Houseboating Tour — 4 Days / 3 Nights
More time, more wildlife, and a gentler pace — perfect for photographers and nature lovers.
Day 1 — Airport · Kumai · Tour Houseboat
Upon arrival at Pangkalan Bun Airport, you will be picked up by your guide and driven 20 minutes to Kumai to board your traditional klotok wooden river boat with an upper deck. In the peaceful afternoon, we will slowly explore the quiet river while observing wildlife such as proboscis monkeys, long-tail macaques, and birds along the riverbanks.
Dinner and overnight on the boat. Simple mattresses, pillows, fine meals cooked on board, bottled mineral water, mosquito nets, a kitchen, and a simple toilet are available on the boat, managed by our helpful guide and boat crew.
Day 2 — The Orangutans of Camp Leakey
After breakfast on the boat, you will visit the famous Camp Leakey, possibly the most famous place for Orangutan Research in the world. Enjoy lunch served on board on the way.
A short visit to the Education Centre is highly recommended, and you may also see agile gibbons and pigs in the camp. We then proceed to the feeding centre. Your guide will carry water, but you should take no food. Please remember that humans transmit diseases to orangutans, so do not initiate contact or eat/drink near them. Occasionally, an orangutan may take you by the hand—just relax and enjoy the moment.
The Camp Leakey feeding is funded by donations to The Orangutan Foundation International USA (led by Professor Dr. Birute Galdikas). Afterward, hike back to the boat for a peaceful cruise back in the evening, passing many roosting proboscis monkeys and perhaps wild orangutans. Dinner and overnight at the klotok.
Day 3 — Pondok Tanggui · Tanjung Harapan Village
We start early with breakfast and leave for the feeding station at Pondok Tanggui, situated one hour upstream, for the morning feeding at 09.00. Look for giant squirrels, pigs, and colorful butterflies on the walk in. After viewing the orangutans, you can walk around the area before returning to the boat.
Lunch will be served on the boat at around 13.30 as we cruise toward the Tanjung Harapan feeding station for the afternoon feeding at 15.00. After the feeding, we will drop by the local Tanjung Harapan village across the river to experience the local community. Dinner and overnight at the klotok.
Day 4 — Tour Houseboat · Kumai · Airport
Enjoy a free morning program and breakfast on the boat. We will boat down the river back to Kumai and transfer to Pangkalan Bun airport for your next destination.
During the boat ride, you will listen to the sounds of Kumai’s tall buildings where swift nests are commercially harvested. Revive all your senses and carry the magic of Tanjung Puting National Park with you!
