Orangutan Houseboating Tour — 5 Days / 4 Nights
The complete Tanjung Puting expedition for travellers who want to see it all.
Day 1 — Airport · Kumai · Proboscis Tour · Houseboat
Upon arrival at Pangkalan Bun Airport, you will be picked up by your guide and driven 20 minutes to Kumai to board your traditional klotok wooden river boat (about 17m by 3.5m) with an upper deck. In the peaceful afternoon, we will slowly explore the quiet river while observing wildlife such as proboscis monkeys, long-tail macaques, and birds along the riverbanks.
Dinner and overnight on the boat. Simple mattresses, pillows, fine meals cooked on board, bottled mineral water, mosquito nets, a kitchen, and a simple toilet are available on the boat, managed by our helpful guide and boat crew.
Day 2 — Camp Leakey · Tour Houseboat
After breakfast, we board the klotok to travel upriver for about 2½ hours, heading up a side creek to Camp Leakey. This is where older orangutans are reintroduced into the rainforest, and it serves as a world-famous research center.
We will trek through the tropical rainforest to search for wildlife, wild orangutans, birds, and other jungle animals, while learning about the tropical plants. We return to the boat for lunch, and then witness the feeding program at 14.00 to observe the orangutans receiving additional food. Dinner and overnight on the houseboat.
Day 3 — Tour Houseboat · Pondok Tanggui · Pesalat · Tanjung Harapan
After breakfast, we board the klotok and travel to Pondok Tanggui, a rehabilitation center for ex-captive orangutans, to see the morning feeding at 09.00.
Afterward, we continue our trip to the Pesalat reforestation camp. Here, you can learn about the replanting project, participate in planting a tree, or take the opportunity to hike in the surrounding forest.
In the afternoon, we visit the Tanjung Harapan rehabilitation center to witness another feeding session at 15.00. After the program, we can visit the local village nearby the park.
Optional Free Program: We can arrange a night walking excursion to spot nocturnal wildlife, glowing mushrooms, or cruise down the river to the nipah palm mangrove to observe fireflies. Dinner and overnight on the houseboat.
Day 4 — Camp Leakey Second Visit · Houseboat
After breakfast, we board the klotok for a second visit to Camp Leakey. The camp features around 40 trails extending deep into the forest and is inhabited by both wild and rehabilitant orangutans. This second visit offers a great opportunity to explore deeper and observe more wildlife in their natural habitat. Dinner and overnight on the houseboat.
Day 5 — Tour Houseboat · Kumai · Airport
Enjoy a free morning program and breakfast on the boat. We will boat down the river back to Kumai and transfer to Pangkalan Bun airport for your next destination.
During the boat ride, you will listen to the sounds of Kumai’s tall buildings where swift nests are commercially harvested. Revive all your senses and carry the magic of Tanjung Puting National Park with you!
